How To Tell If Your Roof Has Tornado Damage

Chances are the sky just did something scary, now you're standing in your yard looking up at your roof wondering, "Is that...tornado damage?"

First things first, you're okay. If you're checking your roof instead of dealing with something worse, that's a good sign. 

Ohio sits in a spot where tornadoes and severe straight-line winds show up more often than most people realize, and every spring and summer, we get calls from neighbors all across Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus asking the same thing: "How do I know if my roof actually got hit?"

Here's what we tell every one of them.

Start on the Ground — Don't Climb Up There Yet

We know the instinct is to grab a ladder and go look. Please don't, at least not yet. Storm-damaged roofs can be unstable, and you can't always tell what's weak just by looking at it from a rung. Do a walk-around of your house and yard first. You can learn a lot without ever leaving solid ground.

Look for:

• Shingles in the yard, gutters, or flower beds — even a few scattered pieces is a sign the wind was strong enough to peel something back.
• Granules collecting in your downspouts or driveway — those little sandy-looking granules are your shingles' protective coating, and heavy wind or hail knocks them loose.
• Bent or dented gutters and downspouts — if your gutters took a hit, there's a good chance your roof did too.
• Damaged siding, fencing, or a stressed tree near the house — sometimes the clearest sign of wind speed is what happened to everything around your roof.

Then Look Up: Signs of Tornado Damage on Your Roofline

From the ground, or from a neighbor's second-story window if you're comfortable asking, take a look at your roofline itself. You're checking for:

• Missing or lifted shingles — patches that look darker or a different color than the rest of the roof usually mean the shingle underneath is exposed.
• A wavy or uneven roofline — this can mean structural movement, which is a bigger deal and worth calling in a professional right away.
• Exposed nails or flashing — these are the little metal pieces that keep water out around chimneys, vents, and edges. If they're bent or missing, that's an easy entry point for leaks.
• Debris damage — tornadoes and severe wind don't just move shingles, they throw tree limbs, siding from other buildings, and yard debris onto roofs, which can puncture or crack materials.

Check Inside Your Home, Too

Some of the most important clues aren't on your roof at all — they're in your attic and ceilings.

• Water stains or discoloration on ceilings, especially in the days after the storm
• A musty smell in upstairs rooms or the attic
• Light coming through your attic roof boards where it shouldn't be
• Soft spots or sagging in ceiling drywall

These signs sometimes take a day or two to show up after a storm, so it's worth checking again once things have settled.

When Tornado Damage Means You Should Call a Professional Right Away

If you see any of the following, don't wait — call a roofing professional the same day:

• A sagging or visibly uneven roofline
• Large sections of missing shingles or exposed decking
• Water actively coming through your ceiling
• Any structural damage to walls, chimneys, or the attic

Even if the damage looks minor from the ground, tornado and severe wind damage is often worse than it appears at first glance. A few lifted shingles today can turn into a full leak after the next rain if they're not caught and repaired.
